“Leica M” Book - A homage to the first 70 years

I’m deeply honoured to have one of the images from my Mayu series featured in the 'Leica M' Book, celebrating 70 years of Leica M history.

While I’ve always been passionate about photography, I never had much interest in cameras or their mechanics. That changed unexpectedly when I visited a photography exhibition in Manhattan and saw the exquisite Leica M cameras on display. At the time, I had stopped taking photos for two years, stuck in a creative slump and struggling with self-doubt. Falling in love with a camera for the first time rekindled my passion and gave me the drive to start photographing again.

Mayu is a collaborative series with a professional Japanese ballet dancer, Mayu Oguri, shot on the Leica M6. During our time living in New York, we captured the series mainly in the industrial areas of Brooklyn, blending grace with grit in every frame.

Jerwoord/Photoworks Awards 5

I’m thrilled to announce that I have been awarded the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 5! This invaluable opportunity will allow me to create a new body of work over the next year, focusing on the issue of school closures in Japan caused by rapid depopulation.

Growing up in a rural town in Niigata Prefecture, I witnessed this issue firsthand when two of the three elementary schools in my hometown were shut down. Recently, I learned that my junior high school is also set to close in just a few years. Every year, about 450 schools in Japan close, highlighting the severity of this crisis. This news has sparked an urgent sense of responsibility in me to create work that raises awareness of this growing problem, which may soon affect other nations as well.

This award makes it possible for me to bring this project to life, and I’m deeply grateful for the support of Jerwood and Photoworks. It's also an honour to embark on this journey with the other awardee, Roman Manfredi. I’m excited to begin this project and look forward to sharing it with you.

The jury panel members included:
Cindy Sissokho, Curator, Cultural Producer & Writer
Ingrid Pollard, Artist and Researcher
Louise Fedotov-Clements, Director of Photoworks
Lúa Ribeira, Photographer
Omar Kholeif, Director of collections and Senior Curator at Sharjah Art Foundation

BredaPhoto Festival 2024

'Ctrl Shift + J' is currently on view at BredaPhoto 2024, curated by Reinout van den Bergh.
The title was inspired by a Japanese keyboard shortcut I frequently use to switch between English and Japanese, subtly reflecting my cultural background. The series explores a diverse range of subjects, from architectural elements to family photos, using geometric forms to convey the sense of displacement I experienced as a child due to relocations and later as an immigrant. These geometric forms are present in the images and are also echoed in the passepartout and the wall. Handprinted photopolymer photogravure.

I’m thrilled to present one of my latest works, Ctrl Shift + J, during the festival. The festival runs from September 13 to November 3, 2024. I hope you can make it!

Tokyo Rumando, Sakiko Nomura, Sayuri Ichida, Emi Anrakuji

Absentee has been showcased in a group show, along with works of Sakiko Nomura, Tokyo Rumando and Emi Anrakuji, at Gallery Écho 119 in Paris.

The group exhibition, entitled 'X-rays of Intimacy,' showcases four Japanese women photographers: Tokyo Rumando, Sakiko Nomura, Sayuri Ichida, and Emi Anrakuji.

Using the camera to observe their own bodies or the bodies of others, representing these bodies, transforming them, and challenging the perceptions of those who watch... This is what these artists have been exploring in their series, which we chose to exhibit together to provide space for women's perspectives and to open a photographic dialogue on intimacy and its representations in both Japanese and Western societies.

In their own unique ways, Tokyo Rumando, Sakiko Nomura, Sayuri Ichida, and Emi Anrakuji focus on intimacy. They photograph models or themselves, creating and acting in their own staged scenarios to question and reclaim their identities. By directing the lens toward the intimate—whether in a direct, disguised, metaphorical, or concealed manner—they help to reshape representations of the female body, nudity, desire, and sexuality, which have historically been shaped by the male gaze.

The solo show 'Fumiko' is on view at PhMuseum Lab in Bologna.

Until 22 July, open every Thursday.

Curated by Venezia Rocco and Giuseppe Oliverio

Text from PhMuseum Lab’s webpage
PhMuseum Lab presents for the first time in Europe the solo exhibition Fumiko, a project by Japanese photographer Sayuri Ichida.
The work stems from the discovery of a biscuits’ tin of metal in the house of the artist's grandparents. The box is full of negatives and prints that portray from childhood to adulthood, the life of Ichida's mother Fumiko, who passed away at the age of 47 from lung cancer. Ichida thus begins a research path through which she investigates the depths of her trauma to stimulate a contemporary debate on concepts such as destiny and memory.
Juxtaposing her family archive with newly made images in response to it, Ichida creates a sophisticated narrative that offers a collective reflection on the difficult process of accepting death. Looking at this work we remember that sooner or later we will all experience some kind of loss, but above all, we rediscover that what matters most is how we keep the positive memory of our loved ones alive.

Ichida’s self-published artist book Absentee has been reviewed by Callum Beaney on 1000 Words

“Callum Beaney argues that Sayuri Ichida’s medium-centric presentation of negative inversions, repetition and silver ink return readers not to photography as the main subject, but towards a physical body amidst the distress of its representation.”

'Absentee' has been featured on Firecracker.

“Her series ‘Absentee’ is a poetic exploration of existentialism, mortality and a personal response to grief.”

SOURCE MA Graduate Showcase 2021

Ichida’s work has been selected by Emma Jones, a curatorial assistant at Tate Modern for SOURCE MA Graduate Showcase 2021 selections.

Selector's Comment: "Ichida's series is stunning. The way images are spliced, mirrored, and related is perfectly executed. An experimental approach to self-portraiture is revealed here, as the human form goes beyond the aesthetic toward something emotionally felt and existential. Questions of morality and grief are difficult and heavy topics, and it is done here with a confident precision that is evocative rather than explicit. Ichida's approach suggests an intricate knowledge of both form and technique. I look forward to seeing what they do next."

Interview: T JAPAN The New York Times Style Magazine, November Issue 2021

Ichida talks about both her previous and current works, as well as her experience practicing as an Asian female photographer.

This interview series is sponsored by Kering as part of their Women in Motion program founded in 2015 to showcase women's contributions to the world of cinema, photography, literature and the plastic arts.
